21.10.2009 The first tutorial with Timo

There will be no explicit question on Michael Meyer`s book.

There will be a question on Narrative Theory and it will be applied to Heart of Darkness.

Terry Eagleton = Literary Theory

Abrams  = The Glossary of Literary Terms

Sanders  = Short Oxford History of English Literature

Thrall & Hibbard  = Literary Dictionary

Chatman  =  Story and Discourse  ---> It is about how to analyze narrative texts.

You do not need to read these books, but you are supposed to produce some information about these books if there is a question.

In the exam, reproduction of knowledge and its application to the text is important.

We will study the techniques  of scientific or academic writing.

Analysis of  narrative texts = novels, short stories.

On the Linguistic Style sheet page 9, page10 and page 12 were covered during the tutorial.

On page 9 we covered Bibliography or list of works cited. It means how to quote someone.

An example of citing books:

Collins, Peter, and Carmella Hollo. English Grammar : an introduction. Basingstoke : Macmillan, 2000.

The title of the book should be italicized. In the exam you can underline it. In our example the word phrase which should be underlined should be English Grammar : an introduction.

As you can see, it is already italicized in the example, so there is no need to underline it.

An example of citing Articles:

Mengel, Ewald. "´Yes! in the sea of Life Enisled`: Harold Pinter`s Other Places." Pinter at 70.

Title of anthology should be italicized. In our example it is Pinter at 70 as you can already see. In the exam you can underline Pinter at 70 to indicate that it should be italicized.
